Nottinghamshire County Council are the Highways Authority for the Borough, which means they are responsible for repairing pot holes, paths, gritting, road safety, and strategic planning for roads.

Dead Animals

If you see an animal that has died or been killed on the road, please report it to us.

All animals will be collected and disposed of in the appropriate manner within one working day. If the animal has identification such as a tag or an id chip the owner will be contacted as soon as possible.

We will not collect animals from motorways or principal A roads, and so do not cover the M1 or the A52. We can collect animals on the A610, but this is only with the assistance of the police due to the nature of the road and traffic.

It is an offence to hit a dog with a moving vehicle. Any deceased dogs should also be reported to the police as soon as possible.

Grass Cutting and Weed Killing

Broxtowe Borough Council are contracted by Nottinghamshire County Council to undertake highways grass cutting and weed killing every summer.

Grass cutting takes place over 5 cuts across the season from April to September and each takes around 3 weeks to cover the whole Borough. Verges in rural areas are cut on 2 occasions during the summer.

Our highway weed control programme commences  in early May by our approved weed control contractor.  There is a second application in September and each application  takes around three weeks to complete.  There is an intermediate application in the four Town centres in July.

The programme includes treatment of:

• All pavements and kerbs on residential roads.
• Council owned car parks.
• Public footpaths in residential areas.
• Edges of paths immediately adjacent to walls or buildings when necessary.

The Council’s aim is not to create a weed free surface, but to treat growth which may cause issues including:

• Safety – weed growth can interfere with visibility for road users and obscure traffic signs.
• Drainage – weeds in kerbs or around drains can prevent or slow down surface water drainage.
• Damage – weed growth can affect paving surfaces and force kerbs apart increasing maintenance costs.
• Appearance – weeds detract from the overall appearance of an area and trap litter.

Only environmentally approved and effective herbicides are used, which is sprayed onto the weeds directly. The herbicides used have a very low toxicity and can be used safely in areas open to the public and their pets.

The Council isn’t responsible for treating private land or property owned by other public bodies or private organisations. Any highways that have not been adopted by the Council will not be treated.

If there is a risk of heavy rain, the weed killer would not work effectively, which means extended periods of wet weather can affect our weed spraying schedule.
