Stapleford Town Council’s History of the Fallen project benefits from Broxtowe Borough Council’s £9,500 UKSPF grant
The grant was made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) from the UK Government.
Stapleford Town Council is coordinating the project to commemorate the 65 people from the town who fell in WWII and are recorded on the town’s war memorial. The project has researched each of the names, trying to find photographs and more details. So far, 42 banners have been produced, each with the image and name of one of those who fell. The remaining banners will be finished by March 2025.
The first 20 banners were produced in June, to coincide with Broxtowe Borough Council’s Freedom Parade that took place in the town. Soldiers and veterans from the Royal Engineers, families of the fallen, local dignitaries and local residents were invited to see the banners displayed in St Helen’s Church.
A further 22 banners are being produced and will be on display from Monday 28 October until Friday 22 November, as part of the commemorations of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. Two banners will be displayed at Walter Parker VC Memorial Square as part of the Stapleford Town Council Remembrance event, complemented by 20 banners at the Library on Church Street and 20 banners at the Carnegie Civic and Community Centre on Warren Avenue.
Councillors Lorraine Longford and John McGrath have led the project, with Councillor Longford leading the research. They have worked with Stapleford History Group and have been helped by the archivist at Chetwynd Barracks. So far, they have been able to produce 42 banners and are hopeful that they can find photographs of all the people named on the town’s memorial. They have received photographs and details from across the world, remaking connections with Stapleford’s diaspora.
Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Asset Management, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said, ‘Remembering those who gave their lives in war is very important to the community, especially when their families still live in Stapleford. I am delighted that we have been able to use UK Shared Prosperity Funding to help Stapleford Town Council make this project happen.’
Stapleford Town Councillor, Lorraine Longford said, ‘This is an important project for the Stapleford community which has involved many people, particularly my colleague Councillor John McGrath. It will be a lasting legacy for the town and we can truly say ‘We will remember them’.’
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is UK Government funded and Broxtowe Borough Council has been allocated a total of £2,584,477 over a three-year period 2022-25. Activity funded in 2024/5 includes local business, skills and community projects, including a set of community grant-funded projects.
