Football £1.4m Boost for Stapleford
The grant will help create two 3G pitches – one small-sized and one full-sized and is in addition to over £7m already being invested in the new community pavilion from the Government’s Town Fund. A 3G pitch gives a flatter surface ensuring year-round playability and the ability for those with disabilities to play sports on the surface.
The new development has already attracted the Steven Gerrard Academy which chose Stapleford as its first base outside of the North West. The former England captain visited Nottingham earlier this summer as the Academy is hosted by the University of Nottingham while works are completed.
Outdated facilities have already been demolished and the new facilities will be open for use in summer 2025.
Ian Jowett, Chair of Stapleford Town Board, said:
“This grant is a fantastic contribution to the new facilities being created at Hickings Lane and we are grateful to the Football Foundation for funding it.
The Pavilion will be available to the community for many activities and sports and more than anything the 3G pitches will enable people with disabilities to take part in sports. The new facilities will be the envy of those across Nottinghamshire and beyond but this is about creating opportunities for the town’s young people.
“Many people have worked hard over many years to see this come to fruition and they should be proud to put Stapleford on the map.”
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said:
“The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.
“Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.
“We’re delighted that works are now underway to deliver the Stapleford Pavilion at Hickings Lane and we’re excited to see the new facilities in action.”
The new facilities are expected to open in summer 2025.
