Cricket club bowled over by Shared Prosperity Fund grant for new equipment.
The club has purchased new pitch covers and additional batting cages that will improve the capacity of their pitch at The Strand. The covers will protect the new hybrid surface and the existing grass square. The grant was made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Funding (UKSPF) from the UK Government.
The new batting nets mean that people can get experience of a good wicket on the club’s training nights. Training on a proper wicket with batting nets will aid in the development of both batters and bowlers across the age groups and is an attractive draw for new players.
The improvements will go towards realising the club’s ambition to be a flagship club for women and girls cricket.
Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Council Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Assets said, 'The opportunity for our residents to participate in sport is tremendously important, particularly for getting young people involved in an active lifestyle. The Council’s grant will mean the club will be able to continue to attract people of all ages and levels of ability to be involved in a sport that is open to all.'
The club has four senior Saturday league teams, two Sunday teams, an U19 squad, two softball and one hardball women and girls team (Attenborough Starlings), hardball age groups from U15 to U11 and over 200 youngsters attending All Stars and Dynamos (age 5 upwards); Attenborough provides a cricketing home for hundreds and hundreds of adults and children from across the local community.
Martin Firbank, Chairman of Attenborough Cricket Club said, 'Attenborough provides a cricketing home for hundreds of adults and children from across the local community, welcoming players of all ages. The new equipment will help us to deliver on our aims to build on what we have to create the best cricketing experience possible to enable all our of members to develop and enjoy playing cricket.'
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is UK Government funded and Broxtowe Borough Council has been allocated a total of £2,584,477 over a three-year period 2022-25. Activity funded in 2024/5 includes local business, skills and community projects.
