Council’s £10,000 UKSPF grant serves up Walking Tennis for Eastwood residents
The club match funded the grant with in-kind volunteer time and money from club funds. The grant was made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Funding (UKSPF) from the UK Government.
£9,000 of the grant is being used to resurface and re-mark the court, making it playable again. The practice court had become dilapidated and overgrown. Members put a lot of time and effort into clearing debris and plant growth.
£1,000 of the grant is being used to deliver coached Walking Tennis sessions, that will run from Monday 4 November 2024 with an initial six-week programme. The club is keen to get the sessions started and will start on their main court, moving over to the practice court when the refurbishment is completed. The Club Treasurer and the Coach have attended a Walking Tennis training session at Nottingham Tennis Centre. The Club plans to build Walking Tennis into its regular playing and coaching schedules.
The club is offering a free Walking Tennis taster session on Saturday 26 October at 10am at Eastwood Tennis Club, Church Walk, NG16 3BG. Regular sessions from Monday 4 November must be booked in advance – contact the club through their Facebook page or email eastwoodltc@gmail.com .
Walking Tennis is safe, fun, and inclusive and a fantastic way to stay active. It’s a game that’s open to anyone - whether a lifelong tennis player, a complete beginner or if you’re someone that just needs a bit more time to get into the swing of things. Walking Tennis offers an easy way for older people to keep their bodies and minds active – while also enjoying the social side of being part of a tennis community.
Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Asset Management, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said:
'I’m pleased that we have been able to help Eastwood Tennis Club refurbish their practice court, especially as it will be used to start a Walking Tennis programme. Exercise is so important to wellbeing and Walking Tennis is an accessible and gentle introduction to the game that allows anyone to participate. I encourage anyone looking to get fitter to go along to the taster session and have a go.'
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is UK Government funded and Broxtowe Borough Council has been allocated a total of £2,584,477 over a three-year period 2022-25. Activity funded in 2024/5 includes local business, skills and community projects, including a set of community grant-funded projects.
