Marching in their footsteps on Armed Forces Day
Freedom of Entry allows military units to march through the Borough in recognition of their outstanding achievements, commitment and dedication in the service of this country and as an expression of the high regard in which they are held by the Council and members of the community.
Lieutenant Colonel Steven Dollimore and Deputy Lieutenant, Colonel Nicholas Hile were offered the royal salute from Major Alistar Whiston who led the marching party.
Reverend Paul Savage of St Helen’s led the short ceremony at Walter Parker VC Square, inviting Councillor Sue Paterson, Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe and Councillor Rahee Ali, Mayor of Stapleford to speak.
Councillor Paterson said: “The commemoration of D-Day and the bravery of those who fought and indeed, those left behind, is something we must not forget. Commemorative events like this help to forge a link between those for who this is still a living memory, and for those who it appears in the pages of their history books. It reminds us of our shared history.
As The Royal Engineers marched through our town, we celebrate them and all those who have marched before them.”
The parade was organised by Broxtowe Borough Council and Stapleford Town Council, with support from The Royal Engineers Works Groups and local organisations.
Lt. Col. Steven Dollimore said: “On behalf of the Royal Engineers Works Group, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Stapleford community for their unwavering support to the soldiers and families of Chetwynd Barracks. Your kindness and generosity have made a profound impact on our lives and morale. We thank you for your continued support.”
