Planning Policy

The Council sets out its planning policies and plans for future development in Local Plans which are prepared and implemented by our Planning Policy team.

Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan

Broxtowe Borough, Gedling Borough, Nottingham City and Rushcliffe Borough Councils are currently undertaking a review of the Aligned Core Strategies. This will result in the production of the Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan.

The Councils are now undertaking a consultation of the Publication Draft of the Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan.

Details of the consultation can be found on the Greater Nottingham Planning Partnership website. (Opens in a New Window)

The consultation period is Monday 4th November 2024 to 17:00 on Monday 16th December 2024.

Local Plan

Broxtowe Borough Council's Local Plan has been undertaken in two parts:

  • Part 1 of the Local Plan (the Aligned Core Strategy) is already established and sets the strategic vision, aims and objectives for the borough as a whole until 2028. The Aligned Core Strategy is currently being reviewed and this will result in the production of the Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan.
  • Part 2 of the Local Plan delivers the strategic aims and objectives as set out in the Core Strategy.

The Local Plan, part 1 and part 2, replaces the 2004 Local Plan which is now located in our Historical Planning Documents webpage.

Neighbourhood Plans

A number of local communities are currently in the process of preparing Neighbourhood Plans for specific areas within the borough which, once ‘made’, will sit alongside the Local Plan and will take precedence over non-strategic policies.

The following Neighbourhood Plans have been 'made' (adopted) by the Borough Council and so form part of the Borough's Development Plan for their respective Neighbourhood Areas:

Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs)

Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) are documents which add further detail to the policies in the Development Plan. They can be used to provide further guidance for development on specific sites, or on particular issues. SPDs can be a material consideration in planning decisions but are not part of the statutory development plan.

The Borough Council has adopted the following SPDs:

The Council is also preparing a Reduction of Carbon in New Development Supplementary Planning Document

Local Development Scheme

The timescale for the preparation of the Local Plan is set out in the Local Development Scheme (LDS).

Measuring Progress

To measure progress towards achieving planning objectives set out in the Local Plan, completed development is monitored and reported in the Authority Monitoring Report (AMR). Land availability and supply is monitored and reported in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA).

Involving the Community

For all aspects of developing the plan, the Council has set out the way in which it will consult with residents and stakeholders in the Statement of Community Involvement (SCI).
