Smoke Control Area Consultation
View the results of the Smoke Control Area Consultation.
The Council asked for your comments on our proposed new smoke control order.
How many people took part?
The Council received 3 responses.
Highlights
- 66% of responding residents were in favour of the proposal to revoke our previous smoke control orders and replace them with a new Borough wide Order.
- No adverse comments were made to DEFRA demonstrating overall support of the action.
- Residents queried why smoke from bonfires could not be controlled, however the smoke control orders relate to smoke from chimneys only. We are unable to ban bonfires but we do act if bonfires are causing a nuisance.
Next steps
You let us know that the new smokeless zone must be properly enforced and we must have enough employees to do it. We will act on this as the new smoke control order will be enforced by Environmental Health and an Enforcement Policy has already been approved by Cabinet to ensure it is enforced effectively.
The proposal is now awaiting approval by the secretary of state.
